Be a part of our enthusiastic and committed group of volunteer legal professionals who provide free legal services to low-income families where no other resources exist.
Although MCVLP serves more than 1,000 disadvantaged clients annually, this number represents only a fraction of the men, women, and children who need legal help. The majority of people in need still go unassisted. And you can help.
The MCVLP matches lawyers who wish to complete pro bono work with low-income clients in need of civil legal assistance. Every year, hundreds of attorneys give the generous gift of time, service, and expertise to thousands of Madison County citizens who otherwise would not have access to justice. This can mean the difference between justice for some and justice for all.
MCVLP relies upon volunteers like you, who come from every type of legal background. Volunteers range from recent law school graduates to the most seasoned attorneys, and include attorneys at large law firms and sole practitioners in Madison County. They all have one thing in common: the desire to use their unique skills and talents to address the critical legal needs of low-income Madison County residents. Whether you are a law firm, lawyer, law student or paralegal, you have the ability to change a life. Any amount of time you can give makes a difference. Many lawyers say that volunteering is the most satisfying aspect of their careers.
MCVLP screens all cases for merit and client financial eligibility. Malpractice coverage, forms, and training (as needed) are provided to volunteers. Time commitments vary according to each case. MCVLP will accommodate your schedule and your preferences
The MCVLP provides opportunities for attorneys who want to give back to the Madison County community, hone their skills, and develop experience in new practice areas. Continuing Legal Education (CLE) trainings are offered throughout the year and are free to volunteers in exchange for accepting a MCVLP case or participating in one of our programs. Check our events calendar for upcoming CLEs.
The MCVLP knows that the effectiveness of a volunteer program is only as strong as its mentors. We are fortunate to have experienced, generous volunteer mentors who serve on our Panel of Experts and are available to guide volunteers in each of our issue areas, always with an eye toward preparing volunteer attorneys to provide exceptional pro bono representation.
Community and Networking
As a MCVLP volunteer, you are part of a lively and diverse community of legal professionals. Through our events, trainings, and clinics, volunteers have the opportunity to meet, collaborate, and network with like-minded colleagues. Check our event calendar for upcoming events.
Earn CLE Credit
In addition to earning CLE credit through participating in MCVLP trainings, attorneys may also earn up to three hours of CLE credits per reporting cycle for their pro bono work.
The MCVLP’s malpractice insurance covers its volunteer lawyers. Corporate lawyers are welcome! The MCVLP also has opportunities for attorneys whose goal is to never set foot in a courtroom and do not require long-term commitment or direct representation.
